The foundation's garden
On October 25, 1996, one year after the artist's death, the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation was established. The purpose of this non-profit foundation, is to continue art-historical research on Bernhard Heiliger's work, to collect and archive documents relating to his artistic production, and to oversee the conservation and restoration work for his extensive estate - consisting of sculptures, drawings, reliefs and assemblages. Further goals are to present Heiliger's works, and to support outside exhibitions through the loan of works.

After its inception, the foundation’s directors were Professor Lothar Romain, the President of the Berlin University of the Arts until his death in July 2005, and Sabine Heiliger, the artist’s widow. Dr. Marc Wellmann, who served as the foundation’s curator from its beginning, took on Romain's role after his sudden passing.

The advisory board currently consists of eleven members: Dr. Volker Hassemer, former Senator for Cultural Affairs in Berlin; Dr. Anita Heiliger, sociologist with the Deutsche Jugendinstitut in Munich; Prof. Stefan Heiliger, designer and Professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach; Prof. Dr. Carl-Heinz Heuer, lawyer; Dr. Wenzel Jacob, Director of the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle, Bonn; Prof. Dr. Robert Kudielka, art historian at the UdK; Klaus Landowsky, lawyer; Walter Rasch, former Senator for Schools in Berlin (chairman of the advisory board); Dr. Joachim Sartorius, artistic director of the Berliner Festspiele GmbH; Dr. Lucie Schauer, art historian; Klaus Wowereit, Mayor of Berlin.
